GM launches Spark @ Rs 3.09 lakh
April 17, 2007

General Motors, the world's biggest carmaker, on Tuesday rolled out its small car Chevrolet Spark in India as it takes on market leader Maruti Suzuki in one of the world's fastest growing automobile markets.

The company has pegged the price of Spark at Rs 3.09 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi) for the base model, slightly lower than Rs 3.21 lakh for Maruti's Zen Estillo base model.

Spark would be available in four options with the prices ranging from Rs 3.09 lakh to Rs 3.89 lakh.

The company, which has so far sold two million units of the small car globally, will initially roll out Spark from its Halol manufacturing facility in Gujarat. GM India officials said the Spark has been fine tuned to suit Indian conditions.

Maruti Suzuki managing director Jagdish Khattar said the company has seen competition hotting up in recent years. He said competition will increase further in future, but ultimately consumers would decide on the success of any model.
