Sensex crashes by 368 points at close

The markets plunged on account of heavy selling in scrips across sectors. The fall was in line with Asian peers.

It was the biggest single-day loss for Sensex and Nifty since July 17.

The Sensex closed at 11,550.69 down 368 points. The Nifty lost 105 points to close at 3366.

The BSE Small Cap Index lost 3.4% to close at 5,829.30.

The BSE Midcap Index lost 3.4% to close at 4,871.46.

All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the negative terrain.

The BSE Metal Index slipped 5.7% at 8,137.41. Hind Zinc, Sterlite Ind, Jindal Steel, Nalco and Tata Steel witnessed heavy selling.

The BSE Auto Index lost 3.67% at 5,016.08. Hind Motors, TVS Motor, Escorts, Cummins, Tata Motors and Punj Tractors slipped on the bourses

The BSE Capital Goods Index was lost 3.4% at 7,807.56. Gammon India, Bharat Elec, HEG, Alstom Projects and Ingersoll Rand closed lower.

The BSE Bankex was down 2.55% at 5,225.37. Federal Bank, IOB, Canara Bank, Karnataka Bank, Union Bank and Bank of India moved downwards.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 2.7% at 5,589.59. Chennai Petro, MRPL, Reliance, GAIL and Petronet LNG slipped.

The BSE FMCG lost 4% to close at 1,956.36. Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea, HLL, Dabur India and Colgate closed in negative terrain.

The BSE Health Care Index lost 3.8% to close at 3,495.27. Orchid Chemical, Aurobindo Pharma, Nicholas Pirama, Wockhardt and Apollo Hospital closed in negative terrain.

The BSE IT Index lost 3.2% to close at 4,138.27. HCL Info, Mphasis BFL, TCS, Infosys and Hexaware Tech closed in red.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7175.19 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 28936.99 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3392.8 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 39504.98 crore.

Markets Today:

Sensex @ 1425 hrs

The markets were witnessing heavy selling pressure. At 2:25 pm, the Sensex was down 244 points at 11,674. The Nifty was down 75 points at 3395.

The market breadth was negative, about 741 shares have advanced, 1667 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.

Top losers were Hindalco (-3.81%), Tata Steel (-3.30%), HLL (-3.01%), Reliance Energy (-2.91%), VSNL (-4%), Hindalco (-3.75%), Tata Power (-3.55%) and Nalco (-3.55%).

Hero Honda (2.30%), Reliance Comm (0.43%), Zee (0.71%) and BPCL (0.32%) were the biggest gainers on the indices.

The BSE Metal Index was down 3.47%. The BSE Capital Goods and FMCG Indices slipped over 2%. The BSE Healthcare, Auto and IT indices tumbled more than 1.70%.

The BSE Bankex Index lost 1.75%. The BSE Oil & Gas Index was down 1.63%.

Sensex @ 1300 hrs

The markets continue trading in negative terrain on the back of heavy selling pressure in sectors like metal, FMCG and pharma.

At 1.00 pm, the Sensex is down 170.22 points or 1.43% at 11748.43, and the Nifty down 58.80 points or 1.69% at 3412.65.

About 807 shares have advanced, 1511 shares declined, and 75 shares are unchanged.  Except consumer durable BSE all other sectoral indices were trading in red.

The BSE metal index was down 2.86% at 8379.68.

The BSE FMCG, pharma, bank, auto, capital goods and oil & gas index were down over 1%.

The top losers on the indices are Hindalco, HLL, Tata Steel, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Nalco and VSNL.

Only two stocks of the Sensex and four stocks of the Nifty are trading in green.
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 233.05 down 3.28% from its previous close of Rs 240.95.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,110.15 down 1.79% from its previous close of Rs 1,130.35.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,772.50 down 1.24% from its previous close of Rs 1,794.70.

BSE metal losers
Hindustan Zinc was quoting at Rs 622.00, down Rs 32.4, or 4.95%.
Sterlite Industries was quoting at Rs 452.00, down Rs 21.9, or 4.62%.
Hindalco was quoting at Rs 176.95, down Rs 6.95, or 3.78%.
Nalco was quoting at Rs 205.75, down Rs 6.8, or 3.2%

Sensex @ 1159 hrs

Markets have lost further ground and moved deeper into the negative terrain tracking its Asian peers.

At 11.59 am IST, the Sensex is down 157.55 points or 1.32% at 11761.1, and the Nifty down 37.65 points or 1.08% at 3433.8.

About 787 shares have advanced, 1429 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Hero Honda up 2.04%, Reliance Comm up 0.36% and HDFC up 0.17%

Top losers on the Sensex are Hindalco down 3.43%, Reliance Energy down 2.79% and HLL down 2.68%

Top gainers on the Nifty are Jet Airways up 2.39%, Hero Honda up 2.28% and Zee up 2.17%.

Top losers on the Nifty are Tata Power down 3.51%, Hindalco down 3.4% and Reliance Energy down 2.87%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 234.00 down 2.88% from its previous close of Rs 240.95.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,107.80 down 1.99% from its previous close of Rs 1,130.35.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,771.90 down 1.27% from its previous close of Rs 1,794.70.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 186.00 down 1.12% from its previous close of Rs 188.10.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 305.50 up 0.16% from its previous close of Rs 305.00.

Sensex @ 1100 hrs

The markets have further moved in the red on account of selling pressure in index pivotals.

At 11.00 am IST, the Sensex is down 80.04 points or 0.67% at 11838.61, and the Nifty down 22.75 points or 0.66% at 3448.7.

About 998 shares have advanced, 965 shares declined, and 63 shares are unchanged.

The top gainers on the Sensex are Hero Honda up 1.91%, Reliance Comm up 1.74% and Satyam up 1.08%.

Top gainers on the Nifty are Zee up 2.51%, Hero Honda up 2.03% and Jet Airways up 1.54%.

Top losers on the Sensex are Hindalco down 2.56%, Tata Steel down 1.98% and Reliance Energy down 1.8%.

Top losers on the Nifty are Hindalco down 2.99%, Tata Power down 2.67% and Tata Steel down 2.2%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 236.70 down 1.76% from its previous close of Rs 240.95.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,119.00 down 1% from its previous close of Rs 1,130.35.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,773.55 down 1.18% from its previous close of Rs 1,794.70.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 186.70 down 0.74% from its previous close of Rs 188.10.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 308.55 up 1.16% from its previous close of Rs 305.00.

Sensex @ 0958 hrs

The markets opened flat on the back of weak Asian cues. At 9:58 am, the Sensex was trading at 11933 up 15 points and the Nifty was trading at 3474 up 3 points.

Wall Street was up on Friday as oil prices fall; Dow was up 60 points.

Asian stocks were lower, Japan's Nikkei was down 0.66% or 105.66 points, South

Korea's Seoul Composite tumbled 0.89% or 12.03 points at 1,342.86.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.35% or 59.58 points, Singapore's Straits Times plunged 0.23% or 5.88 points.

However, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted was up 0.95% or 63.90 points at 6,757.01.
