Will Lalu make a good management teacher?

September 04, 2006

Ever since Lalu Prasad took over as the Union railway minister, the loss-making Indian Railways has become the second-largest profit-earning public sector unit after the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.

So much so that top management institutions, in India and overseas, want him to lecture their students and faculty on the issue.

From a funny, rustic politician to a management don, Lalu's has been an extraordinary transformation. He has offered simple solutions to seemingly difficult problems, and almost managed the impossible.

Why do you think has Lalu been so successful at making Indian Railways profitable? What do you think about Lalu's role as a management teacher? Should Lalu's colleagues also take a leaf out of his book and help turn other loss-making PSUs around?
