Sensex closes at record high of 12,736; up 198 points

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 95 points at 12,633, and then there was no looking back....

Sustained buying in heavyweights saw the index zoom to an all-time high of 12,756. The Sensex finally closed with a huge gain of 198 points at 12,736.

The index thus created history by finishing at an all-time closing high today.

All the sectoral indices finished with gains today. The BSE Teck index advanced 2.5% (78 points) to 3207. The BSE FMCG Index moved up over 1% to 2036. The BSE Capital Goods Index was also up over 1% at 8345. The BSE Auto and Metal indices were marginally down at 5502 and 8691, respectively.

The broad market sentiment, however, was bearish - out of 2,576 scrips traded, 1,440 declined, 1,084 advanced and 52 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Reliance Communications zoomed over 6% (Rs 22) to Rs 368.

Infosys advanced over 3% (Rs 68) to Rs 2,089. Wipro gained over 2% to Rs 557.

HDFC Bank gained over 3% (Rs 30) to Rs 989. HDFC moved up Rs 33 to Rs 1,533.

BHEL added nearly 3% (Rs 67) to Rs 2,395.

While ONGC was up 1.8% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,154, Reliance also gained 1.8% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,190.

Tata Steel slipped over 1% to Rs 511. Bajaj was down Rs 26 at Rs 3,121. SBI was down Rs 8 at Rs 1,022.

VOLUME & VALUE TOPPERS

Gwalior Chemicals topped the volume chart with trades of over 93 lakh shares followed by Richa Knits (65 lakh), Atlanta (62 lakh), Rain Calcining (52 lakh) and Sterlite Opticals (45 lakh).

Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 208 crore followed by Atlanta (Rs 204 crore), Infosys (Rs 176 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 131 crore) and Tech Mahindra (Rs 103 crore).
