Tata Steel would expand the capacity of its Jamshedpur plant from five million tonne per annum to 10 million tonne by 2009-10, a company official said on Tuesday.

Tata Steel would jack up the capacity of the Jamshedpur plant to 6.8 million tonne by 2007-08. The expansion would be done without adding a blast furnace, company deputy managing director T Mukherjee told reporters.

The productivity of the existing blast furnaces would be increased while a steel melting shop would be put up for this purpose, he said speaking on the sidelines of a metals seminar organised by Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Kolkata.

After enhancing the capacity to 6.8 million tonne another three mllion tonne capacity expansion would be taken up to increase it to 10 million tonne, he said.

The new capacity would be in the flat segment, he said, adding that the ratio of long and flat products of the company would be around 65 to 35 per cent.
