Sensex crosses 11K, retreats; ends down 36 points

Heavy selling in the last one-hour or so today saw the Sensex erase all its gains and plunge into red to a low of 10,864 - down 153 points. The index finally settled with a loss of 36 points at 10,905.

BHEL surged 4% to Rs 2,193. Cipla moved up 2.2% to Rs 602, and Bharti Tele gained 1.7% at Rs 391.

Tata Motors [Get Quote] tumbled 3.5% to Rs 906. Bajaj Auto [Get Quote] slipped nearly 2% to Rs 2,705. Maruti [Get Quote] ended with a loss of 1% at Rs 871.

Wipro [Get Quote] shed 2.3% to Rs 531. Satyam [Get Quote] slipped 1.7% to Rs 808.

HDFC [Get Quote] dropped 2% to Rs 1,311. HDFC Bank declined 1.5% to Rs 753, and ICICI Bank [Get Quote] was down 1.3% at Rs 598.

Gujarat Ambuja [Get Quote] shed 1.9% to Rs 97. ACC, Ranbaxy [Get Quote] and Reliance Energy [Get Quote] were down 1% each at Rs 756, Rs 397 and Rs 633, respectively.
