616 points: Sensex's biggest-ever gain

The markets saw a big reversal and shot up on account of heavy buying in scrips across sectors. The Sensex closed with a gain of 616 points. The Nifty closed with hefty gains of 166 points. It was the biggest ever intra day gain for the Nifty and the Sensex.

Among the top gainers are BHEL, Bajaj Auto, Grasim, L&T and MTNL.

Capital goods stocks like Alfa Laval, Carborundum, BHEL, BEML, Larsen, Siemens and Alstom Projects closed higher. The BSE Capital Goods Index ended up 10.3% at 6,365.554.

Technology stocks like Infosys, Wipro, I-Flex Solution, Mphasis and Satyam advanced.

The BSE IT Index gained 7.92% to end at 3,284.57.

Auto stocks like Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor, Hind Motors, Bharat Forge, Hero Honda and Escorts closed higher. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,311.68, up 7%.

Metal stocks like Sesa Goa, Sterlite Ind, JindalStainless, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel and Jindal Saw also gained. The BSE Metal Index closed at 6,968.07, up 6.9%.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index rose 6.42% to close at 2,581.99 due to surge in Titan Industries, Su-Raj Diamonds, Whirlpool and BPL.

FMCG stocks like Tata Tea, Shaw Wallace, Dabur India, HLL, P&G and Nestle also ended in green. The BSE FMCG Index closed at 1,695.60, up 6.39%.

The BSE Bankex also finished rose 5.87% at 4,253.04 as buying was seen in Kotak Mahindra, HDFC Bank, IOB, ICICI Bank, Canara Bank and Andhra Bank.

The BSE Healthcare Index rose 4.93% at 2,967.14 amid buying in pharma stocks like Matrix Lab, Orchid Chemical, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Divis Labs and Nicholas Piramal.

Oil stocks including IOC, Petronet LNG, MRPL, HPCL and ONGC moved up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index ended at 4,626.37, up 4.77%.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6201.96 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 22642.27 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3002.83 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 31847 crore versus Rs 32776.67 crore yesterday.
