Sensex closes below 9,000

The markets had a fairly volatile session, it opened in the positive terrain but slipped in the red as profit booking set in. During noon trades, the Sensex slipped below the 8800 level and the Nifty slipped below the 2600 mark. The Sensex closed with a loss of 133 points at 8929. The Nifty closed down 30 points at 2633.

The CNX Midcap closed with a loss of 90 points.

The BSE Sensex closed at 8,929.44 down 133 points.
The NSE Nifty closed at 2633 down 30 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 4,502.63, down 165 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 3,721.20, down 123 points.
About 436 shares have advanced, 1883 shares declined, and 51 shares are unchanged.
The major losers on the indices were Infosys, TCS, Tata Motors, Hindalco, Tata Tea and ABB.
Other than oil & gas index all the BSE sectoral indices closed in red.

Capital goods stocks like Alfa Laval, BEML, Greaves Cotton, Ingersoll Rand and ABB also slipped. The BSE Capital Goods Index ended down 2.16% at 5,770.98.

Metal stocks like Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Tata Steel and Hind Zinc closed lower. The BSE Metal Index closed at 6,512.80, down 2.36%.

Auto stocks like TVS Motor, Cummins, Sundaram-Clayto, Tube Investment and Tata Motors closed low. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,029.08, down 1.13%.

Technology stocks like Mphasis BFL, I-Flex Solution, Infosys, TCS, Moser Baer and HCL Info also plummeted. The BSE IT Index dropped 4.7% to end at 3,043.53.

FMCG stocks like Tata Tea, Nestle, McDowell, P&G, Shaw Wallace also ended in red. The BSE FMCG Index closed at 1,593.80, down 0.89%.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index witnessed a of 1.99% to close at 2,426.23 due to Samtel Color, Titan Industries, Su-Raj Diamonds and BPL.

The BSE Bankex also finished lower by 1.54% at 4,017.18 as selling was seen in Kotak Mahindra, Union Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and PNB.

Oil stocks including Kochi Refin, HPCL, BPCLand IOC gained. The BSE Oil & Gas Index ended at 4,415.90, up 0.39%.
The BSE Healthcare Index also closed down 2.13% at 2,827.70 amid selling in pharma stocks like Matrix Lab, Divis Labs, Sterling Bio and Aventis Pharma.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6828.27 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 22948.05 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3000.35 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 32776.67 crore versus Rs 27443.26 cr yesterday.
