In the continuing battle for supremacy between the public and private sector, corporate behemoth Reliance Industries Ltd has once again pipped Oil and Natural Gas Corporation as the numero uno firm in terms of market capitalisation.

RIL's market cap increased to Rs 1,72,000 crore (Rs 1,720 billion) as compared to ONGC's Rs 1,68,000 crore (Rs 1,680 billion).

RIL shares surged 2.49 per cent to Rs 1,238.10 at the BSE on Wednesday, while that of ONGC plunged by over 2.04 per cent to Rs 789.

Earlier in October, Reliance had overtaken ONGC in terms of M-cap only to be pushed back by the PSU major.

IT major Infosys maintains its third position with a market cap of Rs 1,19,000 crore (Rs 1,190 billion), followed by another PSU major National Thermal Power Corporation at Rs 1,15,000 crore (Rs 1,150 billion).

Telecom major Bharti Airtel is the fifth most valued firm with a market cap of Rs 1,13,000 crore (Rs 1,130 billion).
