Wipro hungry for acquisitions

April 19, 2006 16:24 IST

IT major Wipro is on the prowl, looking to acquire companies that enhance its global presence, knowledge base and existing pool of expertise.

Stating that the Wipro's experience with acquisitions has so far been very satisfactory, its Chairman Azim Premji said that the company would pursue this (takeover) strategy more aggressively in future.

"Our approach toward acquisitions is not just increase numbers... (it is) to build certain geographical footprint, particularly in Europe, where we think there is a huge potential for future growth," he said.

Premji also added that through acquisition, Wipro was looking at building "domain expertise, to acquire intellectual property and patents and to basically strengthen our level of consultancy skills."

Wipro's 2005-06 net profit up at Rs 2,020 cr

Noting that the NYSE-listed company's acquisitions last fiscal were "fairly widespread" and were in the areas of technology infrastructure services, banking and product engineering, he said, "You will continue to see a mix of acquisitions as we go forward."

Premji said innovation initiatives contributed five per cent of the company's total revenues in 2005-06.

"Our objective is to take it to ten per cent of our revenues in the next three years on the revised basis on what I see it will be in three years," Premji said, adding the strength of innovation teams would be ramped up significantly in the current financial year.
