IIT-ians protest against reservation

April 18, 2006 20:31 IST

Over 1,000 students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, on Tuesday took out a march opposing the move to provide reservation to backward classes in the Central educational institutions.

The students who took out a three km protest march inside the IIT campus said that the reservation would "affect merit in IITs".

Should there be quota in IITs, IIMs?

It would "split the student community on the basis of caste. It would not improve the socio-economic status of the OBCs, as it claimed, Ram who led the march told PTI.  The students had conducted a signature campaign against the issue a couple of days ago.

"We will send the protest letter signed by nearly 2000 IIT-ians to the President and the Ministry of Human Resources and Development," Ram said.
