'The bull market is still alive'

March 15, 2005

Singla : TV18:- After NDTV PROFIT launch, this stock has not been on move since quite some time( It has come off from 250 to 210 levels). On the other hand NDTV stock is showing good signs. Do you think NDTV is better option as compared to TV18 ???
Ramesh S Damani : I like both of them. and my sense is both will do well.

venu : hello sir i had logix micro systems at rs.37 from two years what is your opinien
Ramesh S Damani : They are doing well, I would hold on.

TINI : sir, in gas sector besides Gail would you like to include BOC, a mnc company & supply industrial gases & a very good turnaround story. please reply thanks
Ramesh S Damani : They have been doing well; I am keeping an eye on it.

pawan : sir you said on hydrebad investor camp that when a bull run end up its end up very hard. had bull run on indian markets ended ? what you say sir ?
Ramesh S Damani : Hello everyone thanks for joining. Let's start. My sense is that the bull market is still alive and well.....just going through growing pains

JB1 : VSNL [Get Quote]: Sir TRAI has slashed the broadband rate. Will it impact the profit? Do you still recommend VSNL?
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, I think so.

raman : Rameshji, Given the huge US trade account deficit which is leading the dollar fall, do you think nucleus and tata elxsi will perform better despite the falling dollar
Ramesh S Damani : That would be a worry for all tech cos

rajesh : Hello Sir, I have made some investment without even doing proper ground work, I have invested thru IPO's and some recommendation like yours ( my unrealized profit is around 30% I don't know whether its good or not in the bull market). Now i feel its better for me to understand how to evaluate a company before i make an investment. So i request you to suggest me some books which will help me to learn to evaluate a company. In this way i know what i am doing.
Ramesh S Damani : Look at past transcripts where i have recommended books.

DamaniFan : Sir, I have been following ur advice since 8 months almost now. Most of the stocks that you have recomended have appreciated well (Nucleus, McDowell, Godfrey, Balmer Lawrie) since then. But, two of them, Venkys and VSNL have really gone down since then. Do you suggest to consolidate these at these levels or should I exit these? Also, what is your view on ITC hotel? Sir, please do reply. Thanks.
Ramesh S Damani : I remain invested in all of them. ITC hotels will be merged with ITC.

sanujkadavil : sirdid you gone throgh the article on ABEE INFO on business india. they are targetting 100cr turnover in 2009 on most conservative basis. stock up20% with huge volumes with 1million pending buying orders.
Ramesh S Damani : I did. However, I am not sure they can deliver those kind of rates. At current prices though you may be on to something.

Singaraj : TV TODAY.Even if FDI in media happens,it looks like a certain possibility that there will be a lot of restrictions for news broadcasters in particular. Then how much of help the much avaited FDI in media can do to this co?.Also any idea on whether it is going to happen sooner?
Ramesh S Damani : Once FDI happens the stocks will explode.

Vinay : Hello Damaniji, how are you? I enjoy your chat transcripts every wednesday on Rediff. Got a chance to take part in today. Do you think its still time to stay invested? or is it better to hold on to cash? As Peter Lynch says, if everything seems to be expensive, its better to park ur money in banks rather than be sorry abt ur investments. your thoughs please. Thanks,
Ramesh S Damani : My sense is that we are well within a bull market. I would remain invested.

Analyst : Drdeging corp: Rich Cash reserves, monopolistic co with increasing profits. With the reserve cash, and EPS of 53 the current PE should come down to 5.5 from the current 10.3. Would you think Dredging is good buy from this, with the udget also favouring Dredging industry ? - Your fan
Ramesh S Damani : I think it is a good value buy.

POM : Would you like to comment on Banco Products??
Ramesh S Damani : Optimistic.

R.K.SINGAL : PSU Stocks :- how do you find NEYVELI [Get Quote] LIGNITE ?? Is it a good buy ??? Any other stocks you like in PSU space ???
Ramesh S Damani : Balmer Lawrie.

rjsvj : sir, What does book value of a stock signify? Say if book value of a stock is Rs 100/- does that mean it should be priced around 100?By same logic book value of GTL is 186 but the share is priced around 110. Is it a good buy? Your views please.
Ramesh S Damani : Book value represents net tangible assets of the company. Tech companies have low book value. It is one parameter to use.

KRR : Good afternoon Sir... ONE quuestion, which i think all your fan want to ask..... WHAT DO WE DO WITH MCDOWELL and UB HOLDING NOW?? i myself has been holding MCD since 45 and UBH since 26... I have been patient enough and i still can be ... just want to know your views... thanks :-)
Ramesh S Damani : My sense is conolidation is taking place and then a strategic sale. Lets watch who wins Shaw Wallace [Get Quote].

Amit : MCDOWELL : Thanks for receommending . Now it is clear that they want to sell to STRATEGIC INVESTOR as indicated by CFO - MCDOWELL , Don't u think this run is just a begining , its long - long way to go
Ramesh S Damani : Cheers to that.

Amit : NUCLEUS : I heard MD interview with bloomberg . I think this is STOCK for not only this year but may be next year . Wonderful prospects, just opening up
Ramesh S Damani : I think we are in good hands with Vishnu Dusad. He is running a good company.

sanujkadavil : sirfinancial tech with mktcap of 1200cr. fidelity picked 3% at 300/share. owns 50% in mcx. also joint venture in dubai gold exchange,. but HDFC BANK [Get Quote] BOUGT stake in MCX at 25cr valuation. whats ur call on FINANCIAL TECH
Ramesh S Damani : It does seem over priced.

Analyst : Damaniji: Does INDIATV (Shakti Kapoors favourite channel) belong to any listed company stable? It may be a good investment :-) - Your Value fan
Ramesh S Damani : No.

jbala : Sandesh? Sir, Govt is planning to allow FII and NRI to invest in print media. Consider book value of SANDESH, isn't good bet?
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, keep an eye on it.

Amit : LOGISTICS : Now , amalyst have started recommending logistics companies. Besides GATI are u equally serious with TCI as i find TCI more attractive
Ramesh S Damani : I own both.

ManishS : Mr. Damani, how do you rate Glaxo's buy back offer @ Rs800/share? Do you think GSK [Get Quote] stock has any more steam left?
Ramesh S Damani : I think so.

hongkong : Torrent [Get Quote] cable- Power cable manufactures have produced better trunover. their delta on net profit is low. Please your comment. Is it worth to hold for one year?
Ramesh S Damani : I am willing to be patient with this stock. Turnaround is happening.

Tabu : Sir,Ihave been following your chat for last 3 years.Ihave been emensly benifitted in e-Serve.Now I have bought Mcdowell.Do u think that value will still unlock in this.I am along term invester. Thank you very much,SIR.
Ramesh S Damani : I recommended it around 40-50 level because people had a huge margin of safety. At thses prices I would hold but not buy until I know about Shaw Wallace.

KRR : Thanks sir... I juust checked herbotsons counter... there was a huge volume... last price being 370 and average price 280+... looks like chhabariya's stake has been transferred... :-)
Ramesh S Damani : Yes it has.

pawan : sir when will we see you as guest in wizard of dalal street. but this time we want rakesh jhunjhunwala as your anchor ?
Ramesh S Damani : Thanks for the nice words.

R.K.SINGAL : LOGISITCS:- I feel that the companies which offers Intergarted logistics solutions are better poised for growth as compared to traditional companies of mainly transportation oriented business. I think warehousing and custom clerance part of Logisictic chain have more margin as compared to transporation portion. So the companies with execellent warehouses and good IT infrastructureshould do well. The players with both these facilites are mainly not listed (DHL,Fed Express and Safe Express) , How do you find GATI and TCI poised in comparison ot these MNC gaints. Out of GATI and TCI which one looks a better option ??
Ramesh S Damani : Both look good and so does Balmer Lawrie. Gati and TCI are cheaply priced.

Amit : MCDOWELL : If they get SWC then are u ready to buy more . By the way internal news is that they are going to get SWC
Ramesh S Damani : It looks promising.

jbala : Sir any idea about the constuction status of UBcITy? will it add any income to UBholding in this quarter?
Ramesh S Damani : I am not sure which quarter.

Neewbieatstock : Sir these are some of the books you have recommended/spoken about. can you simple reply so we have a list for everyone 1 Barbarians At The Gate2 Capital Ideas3 Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits4 Reminiscences of a Stock Operator5 Warren Buffet Way, The6 What I Learned Before I Sold to Warren Buffet7 What They Still Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School8 Stock Market Wizards9 Buffett - The making of an American Capitalist10 One Up on Wall Street11 A passion for excellence12 Berkshire Hathaway Letters 1977-198613 Berkshire Hathaway Letters 1987-199314 Bull - History of the boom15 Adventure Capitalist16 Investment Biker17 A Short History of Financial Euphoria 18 The Intelligent Investor19 Market Wizards20 The New Market Wizards21 Buffett The Making of an American Capitalist22 On Balance Volume23 Of Permenant Value24 Cable Cowboy25 A Piece of Action
Ramesh S Damani : Thanks and I will keep adding from time to time.

Vinay : Sir, with Sales tax dept bribe racket exposed last week on AajTak, do you think that, if they continue to do such investigative reports, the channel has a good scope to become No-1 news channel again?
Ramesh S Damani : Yes.

hongkong : Rice exporters like KRBL, Satnam overseas, Lakshmi overseas are being re-rated. Do you have any pick in this sector?????????????????/
Ramesh S Damani : My friend recommends Satnam and Rei Agro [Get Quote]

Ram : Software:Mr Damani Since manufacturing is picking up and Outsourcing for Auto components is to be going up How do you feel about the Companies like Maars Software and California Soft for the E-Business in the manufacturing segment
Ramesh S Damani : I am not sure they will gain from it.

sanujkadavil : sirUB holding -:MALLYA may try to list UB holding in overseas than mcdowel and UB.becoz its FLAGSHIP and he personally holds more stake , will try to make more value in UB holdings... whats your view on it
Ramesh S Damani : I think he will.

Neewbieatstock : Sure thing i have more will format them (some of these arnt mentioned by you but have to be read) i have a complete one at home will get it next chat
Ramesh S Damani : Thanks a lot.

baracuda : what is your view on mangalore chemicals and fert at rs14 itmarket cap is around 120cr they are also setting up a met coke unit would yu look at it
Ramesh S Damani : I would. They have been turning around.

Amit : UB HOLDING : UNstoppable , again freeze . Whats there so hot that its freezing everyday
Ramesh S Damani : Value my friend, it owns 25% of Herbertsons and 40% of Mcdowell.

GEETIKA : AFTER SUKUMAR, HOW MANY MORE GUESTS ARE EXPECTED IN YOUR SHOW. ITS BEEN A EXCELLENT SHOW AND HOPE TO LEARN MORE FROM SUCH VALUABLE INTERVIEWS.
Ramesh S Damani : Maybe 3-4 more.

Neewbieatstock : If Kingfisher air is to list would all the companies get shares (mcdowell,ub,ub holdings) something like whats happening in Jp associates- the existing shareholders are getting a prefrence. How does ub holding stand to gain from kingfisher airways ?
Ramesh S Damani : It owns 10% of Kingfisher.

baracuda : ub holding also dont forget that if the market values jet at above 1000 than at what price should the market value kingfisher airlines
Ramesh S Damani : It is being run by a guy from Jet Blue in USA which is the best run airline in US.

siniya : Sir is it 10% or 100% of kingfisher
Ramesh S Damani : 100% from what I know.

VICKY : SIR CAN YOU PROVIDE ME AN ADVICE. DO U THINK ONE CAN GAIN IN THE DERIVATIVES MARKET IN THE LONG RUN PROVIDED HE CAN DO ALL ADVANCE DERIVATIVE TECHNIQUES AND IS IT LUCRATIVE IN THE LONG RUN TOO. PLZ ADVICE
Ramesh S Damani : It is doubtful. Derivatives is only for full time professionals

baracuda : having mcdowell, ubbeer, ubholding and mangaloer chem and fert lead to a concentrated holding in one business house something which ben graham would have objected
Ramesh S Damani : Maybe

anand12 : SIR - this is not fair - this counter is blazing with MC and in high spirits with the gains. CHEERS to that - but what about the freshers - Something for us to begin our journey too
Ramesh S Damani : As I said in the previous Q. Look at Mount Everest

GEETIKA : HAVE YOU TRIES THE "HIMALAYAN MINERAL WATER" AND HOW WOULD YOU RATE THIS COMPANY? PLEASE
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, I rate it well. I am recommending Mount Everest to investors with a 2-3 year view. Buy only if you are patient.

sanujkadavil : SIRABSOLUTELY ENJOYING MCDOWELL AND UB. I WILL BE COMING TO MUMBAI. DEFINITELY WE WILL ARRANGE A PARTY FOR YOU.....
Ramesh S Damani : Thanks Sanuj. See you all next week. Bye
