Buy air tickets at petrol pumps now

Launching a new concept in the Indian aviation scene, Air Deccan on Monday announced a strategic tie-up with Hindustan Petroleum to sell tickets of the 'no frills' airline at HP retail outlets across the country.

This partnership would enable the low cost carrier to expand its ticketing network to every nook and corner of the country. A similar practice is in vogue in the US.

Announcing this in New Delhi, Air Deccan chief G R Gopinath also said the airline would have 1000 tickets every month for a sale price of Re 1, spread over the airline's route network and flights, though the next slab of its ticket would continue to be sold at Rs 500 plus taxes.

He said the airline has set a target of one billion passenger seats and would be adding one Airbus A-320 and an ATR every month over the next six months.

Claiming to be the world's fastest growing airline, Gopinath said the civil aviation sector in the country was growing but more efforts were needed to match up to other countries like the US and Malaysia.

HPCL general manager (North Zone) R Sudhakar Rao said the partnership was a win-win situation for both the companies and was part of the PSU's efforts to provide more value-added services to its customers.

To mark the beginning of its partnership with HPCL, Gopinath said 30 petrol stations in Delhi would distribute tickets in the national capital through e-ticketing. The initiative was first launched with ten HPCL outlets in Bangalore in March this year.

He also inaugurated the initiative by buying a ticket from a nearby HPCL outlet. The low-cost carrier has announced 'Superflier' and 'Superflier Plus' scheme for sale of 30 and 36 tickets at a cost of Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

While the first scheme would valid for any Air Deccan ATR sector, the other one would be valid for any sector, including in which larger Airbus aircraft operate.

At present, the airline operates 111 flights a day with a fleet of five Airbus A-320 aircraft and 12 48-seater ATR-42s.

Air Deccan has ordered 60 brand new aircraft 30 A-320s and 30 ATR-72-500s -- to be delivered over the next five years, which would increase the number of its daily flights 600 by the end of five years.
