Coming soon: 10-rupee coins

The government will introduce ten-rupee coins to partially supplement Rs 10 notes.

This follows the approval given by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs for this purpose. The CCEA also delegated powers to finance ministry for design and metal composition for the ten-rupee coins, an official release said.

The designs and themes of the new series of designs have been prepared by National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad.

The coins will be issued with three different themes -- Unity in Diversity, Mudras from Bharatnatyam and Connectivity and Information Technology.

The observe side of all the coins will, however, carry Lion Capital as well as denomination in Roman numerals.

The release also said notes of Rs 10 denomination will continue to be printed and issued in circulation, though in reduced quantity after the introduction of the coins.

The purposes of issuing coins is to take care of security features against counterfieting and easy recognition by public.
