Retailer Metro plans Bengal operations

November 23, 2004 16:06 IST

German multinational distribution chain Metro Cash and Carry International is planning to set up distribution infrastructure for agricultural produce in West Bengal.

''We are looking at distribution infrastructure like warehouses and cold storages for fruits and vegetables,'' managing director of Cash and Carry India, Harsh Bahadur said after a meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen.

MCCI chief executive Thomas Hubner and vice-president (international affairs) Heinrich Birr were also present at the meeting.

Pointing out that West Bengal had six agri-climatic zones that were beneficial for agriculture, Bahadur said although the state ranked top in the production of fruits and vegetables, 40 per cent of the crop was lost owing to poor procurement and distribution infrastrcuture.

MCCI, which has presence in 26 countries, operates in India only from Bangalore.

Later, Bhattacharjee said while the company was aiming to create distribution infrastructure for the domestic market, it was also exploring possibilities of exporting some of its procurement of fruits and vegetables.
