Santro zing: 25,000 in 3 days

S Kalyana Ramanathan in New Delhi | November 12, 2004 16:15 IST

Hyundai Motor India has received over 25,000 bookings for the Santro Xing for the three days beginning November 9, during which the company cut the price of its top-selling car by as much as Rs 40,000. This is thrice as many Santros the company sold during the whole of October.

As a festival offer, Hyundai had cut the price of the Santro Xing Xe to Rs 3,00,001, the Santro Xing Xp to Rs 3,09,309, the Santro Xing Xg to Rs 3,29,329 and the Santro Xing Xs to Rs 3,59,359. Buyers who booked the car during the offer period will have to pay the full sum by 20 November.

Hyundai's deal did not go unmatched. Market leader Maruti Udyog threw in free accessories and gift vouchers for its Zen and WagonR but kept its top selling models, the Maruti 800 and the Alto, out of the offer.

The scheme, which opened on November 8 and closes on November 15, gives away accessories and gift vouchers worth Rs 28,900 and Rs 26,500 on the Zen and the WagonR, respectively.

Maruti said the response to its Diwali offer was "massive" but a company spokesperson said the festival sales volume would be divulged only after the offer closed on November 15. Though the entire industry did not come out with offers as attractive as Hyundai's and Maruti's, the festive season is expected to further boost passenger car sales.

At the current pace of growth, this financial year is likely to attain the distinction of being the year in which passenger car sales in India crossed 1 million.
