Gold, worth crores of rupees, belonging to the State Bank of India was reported missing three days ago during transit from Mumbai to Delhi.

Police registered a case Sunday after Indian Airlines, which was ferrying the cargo lodged a complaint that a parcel containing about 25 kg of the precious metal had gone missing on May 7, sources said.

The parcel belonged to the State Bank of India and was booked for Delhi on the Indian Airlines flight number IC658.

However, it was found missing when the flight reached Delhi. Indian Airlines investigated the matter on its own to try and trace the parcel, they said.

However, after it failed in the endeavour, the Airlines approached police Sunday, the sources added.

Gold insured

The 25 kg gold consignment of State Bank of India, missing from Indian Airlines cargo complex at Delhi airport since May seven, was insured under Oriental Insurance Company's 'gold transmit insurance' policy.

The bank had imported the gold and the consignment was meant for its branches as part of the Metal Gold Loan Scheme formulated by Reserve Bank of India for providing primary gold to jewellers, who were involved in exporting jewellery, SBI sources said on Monday.
