MUL's sales rise 38.4% in April

Maruti Udyog Ltd, India's biggest carmaker, said on Friday that its sales surged by a robust 38.4 per cent at 39,838 units in April 2004 over 28,793 units in the same month last year.

Maruti sold 36,928 units in the domestic market in the review month, a company statement said.

Sales of M800, Maruti's bread-and-butter model, grew 3.3 per cent to 11,097 units. Omni van and Versa multi purpose vehicle sales rose 21.2 per cent to 4,816 units.

The sales of compact cars - Alto, WagonR and Zen - registered a rise of 99.6 per cent to 19,296 units. The company sold 1,313 units of mid-size sedan, Esteem and Baleno, a growth of 38 per cent.

MUL's Gypsy and sports utility vehicle Vitara saw a rise of 31 per cent to 406 units.

The exports, however, dipped 7.6 per cent to 2,910 units.
