On June 16, 2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed eminent economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. Montek was part of the team under the then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh that started reform process in 1991. He went on to become the finance secretary in 1993. Before his latest stint, he was the International Monetary Fund's first Director of Independent Evaluation Office.
