MUL not keen on luxury segment

July 07, 2004 15:46 IST

Maruti Udyog Ltd, the country's largest car manufacturer, has no plans to pay special attention to the luxury car segment and will rather play the volume game, a senior company official said.

K Saito, director (marketing) of MUL, said the primary aim of the company was to target the mass segment, in which it was already maintaining a leadership position.

Speaking at a press conference that marked the launch of the new Esteem in Kolkata on Tuesday, Saito said, in reply to a query, that luxury sedan Baleno, whose sales have not been encouraging, would continue to remain in the D segment, but refused to say if MUL would re-launch the car to push up sales.

He said the company had already rationalised the prices of Baleno, which had helped in increasing volumes in the market.

The new Esteem would be pitted against models like Ford Ikon and Tata Indigo, he said.
