Railways plan special tourist trains

July 06, 2004 15:03 IST

In an attempt to encourage budget tourism, Railways proposes to run special trains of ordinary sleeper class to places of religious and historical importance, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said on Tuesday.

Announcing this in the Rail Budget, he said these trains will collect the tourists from a region and take them to important religious and historical places at affordable cost.

Apart from promoting tourism, this will enable the common man to travel around the country easily, Prasad said.

While Indian Railways have been running trains for upper end tourists like Palace on Wheels, Royal Orient, no such facility exists for common people particularly from small towns and villages, he said.
