Hope BPO ban will be debated: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday expressed its hope that the US Senate law prohibiting government contractors from shifting work overseas would be debated and discussed before any formal approval is given to it.

"We hope there would be due deliberation in the US on this question. In the long run, it is a losing proposal for US. We feel this is against basic spirit of free world trade. India is not like South Asian economies, which depend wholly on US demand," party spokesman Prakash Javadekar told reporters in New Delhi.

However, this move by the US Senate reflects the political compulsion of the US administraton as it is the election year, he said.

He said the resilience of Indian economy had stood the country in good stead during the South Asian crisis.
