Sensex gains 65 points at close

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 17 points at 6,085. After remaining subdued throughout the opening session, and slipping to a low of 6,012 in mid-morning deals, the index rolled back into positive zone in the afternoon trades and remained firm thereafter as renewed buying in select heavyweights, PSUs, cement, auto and pharma counters lifted it to an intra-day high 6,148.

The Sensex finally wrapped up the day with a smart gain of 65 points at 6,133. The Nifty, too, bounced from its lows, and ended 19 points higher at 1,964.

Reliance held gains on sustained buying support, and raked in 3% gains (Rs 18) to Rs 588. HLL closed up a tad at Rs 208. ITC, however, ended down a per cent (Rs 15) at Rs 1,098.

Infosys and Wipro moved up a per cent each at Rs 5,794 (up Rs 73) and Rs 1,746 (up Rs 14), respectively. Satyam, however, ended with a loss of around 2% (Rs 6) at Rs 355.

BHEL bounced from its lows in afternoon deals, and advanced 4% (Rs 24) to Rs 586. SBI and MTNL closed up a per cent each at Rs 646 (up Rs 5) and Rs 155 (up Rs 2), respectively. HPCL, however, witnessed selling throughout the session, and dropped 3% (Rs 15) to Rs 461.

Ranbaxy rallied sharply on sustained buying support, and spurted 4% (Rs 44) to Rs 1,122. While Dr. Reddy's gained 2% (Rs 30) to Rs 1,400, Cipla closed up a per cent (Rs 16) at Rs 1,357.

Tata Motors witnessed sharp buying in its counter, and added 6% (Rs 27) to Rs 495. Hero Honda clocked a per cent gain (Rs 7) to Rs 491. Bajaj ended down a per cent (Rs 13) at Rs 1,060.

Grasim logged gains in early noon deals, and jumped 3% (Rs 39) to close at Rs 1,163. ACC closed up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 265. Gujarat Ambuja, however, lost a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 312. L&T ended marginally lower at Rs 578.
