TV makers demand CAS roll out

January 09, 2004 13:50 IST

The Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association on Friday asked the government to roll out conditional access system in the remaining zones of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata and clear the present uncertainty on its implementation.

"We are strictly of the view that CAS should be implemented in right earnest in the remaining parts of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata at an early stage, as envisaged earlier, thus clearing the uncertainty on implementation of CAS," Anoop Kumar, chairman of Cetma's CAS council said in a statement in New Delhi.

He said the CAS not only provided great choice to the consumer, but opened the door to the realm of interactive services over and above the normal TV viewing like Internet access, e-mail, pay per view, interactive sports, video on demand and distance education.

He said after the CAS legislation was passed, the industry invested over Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) in creating infrastructure, production facilities and inventories to implement the new system.

"This investment by the industry would go waste if the government, at this stage, decides to roll back CAS," he said.
