Insurance, telecom, IT to generate jobs: Study

BS Corporate Bureau in New Delhi | January 01, 2004 16:46 IST

The telecommunications and insurance sectors will provide a lot of career opportunities for fresh graduates in the future, according to a recent study by Elixir Web Solutions.

The telecom sector, which is seeing 70 per cent growth now, is expected to touch 80 percent in the near future.

"The insurance sector also holds a lot of potential with the market expected to hit the $25-billion mark by 2010. This industry will generate 500,000 jobs in the next five years. The opening of the insurance sector to private players has resulted in the creation of new positions like those of surveyors, claims processors, agents, underwriters and actuaries," Prashant Sachdeva, business analyst, Elixir Web Solutions, said.

The information technology-enabled services industry will also provide new avenues for youngsters, the report says. According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies, 65,000 new ITES jobs happened in January-June 2003 and this growth is likely to continue. The sector will employ 225,000 people six months from now.

Another estimate by Frost & Sullivan reveals that the call centre services market will grow from a $237.7 million in 2002 to $753.7 million in 2008.

For fresh graduates there also are several new career opportunities like auto finance, telecom management, foreign languages (teachers, interpreters and translators), actuarial services, materials management, communications management, brand management, technical writing and mutual fund marketing.
