Sensex ends flat at 6,012

The Sensex, after opening with a positive gap of 14 points at 6,026, moved past the 6,050 levels to touch a high of 6,064 in mid-morning deals on selective buying. While the markets displayed range-bound trend till early noon trades, selling in select old and new economy stocks thereafter saw the index drift into the red to touch a low of 6,002.

The Sensex, however, wiped out its losses on selective gains at the close, and ended flat at 6,012. The Nifty, too, after touching a low of 1,909, bounced back to end at Friday's close of 1,914.

BHEL edged higher to close up 2.68% (Rs 16) at Rs 614. MTNL moved up 2.23% (Rs 3) to Rs 140. HPCL slipped a per cent (Rs 4) to close at Rs 478. SBI ended marginally lower at Rs 630.

ITC ended off-highs with a per cent gain (Rs 8) at Rs 1,069. HLL slipped from higher levels to close down 1.72% (Rs 3) at Rs 199. Reliance was down Rs 3 at Rs 592.

BSES mopped up 4.32% gains (Rs 28) to close at Rs 668. While Bharti Tele rose 3% (Rs 5) to Rs 158, Zee added 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 157. Tisco clocked a per cent gain (Rs 4) to Rs 444.

Tata Motors and Hero Honda closed up a per cent each at Rs 559 (up Rs 6) and Rs 504 (up Rs 3), respectively. Bajaj, however, remained weak through the session, and closed down a per cent (Rs 12) at Rs 1,009.

Infosys ended off-gains on selling pressure at Rs 5,350 - down Rs 27. Wipro (down Rs 12 to Rs 1,616) and Satyam (down Rs 2 to Rs 336) also ended at lower levels.

Grasim, after holding on to its gains for better part of the trading session, ended weak on profit-taking at Rs 1,137 - down Rs 3. Gujarat Ambuja and ACC closed down a tad each at Rs 307 and Rs 272, respectively. L&T, however, attracted considerbale buying support, and surged 4.23% (Rs 22) to Rs 549.

Dr. Reddy's lost 1.20% (Rs 15) to Rs 1,239. Ranbaxy was down a rupee at Rs 999. Cipla, however, ended with a marginal gain of Rs 3 at Rs 1,221.

HDFC shed 2% (Rs 14) to Rs 659. While ONGC slipped 1.29% (Rs 9) to Rs 727, Tata Power closed down a rupee at Rs 394.
