VSNL, Bharti undersea cable safe

December 28, 2004 19:44 IST

Bharti's undersea fibre-optic cable connecting Chennai with Singapore has not been affected by the deadly tsunami waves, triggered by the massive quake off the Indonesian coast, its CMD Sunil Mittal said on Tuesday.

"Thankfully everything is fine. There was no damage at all", Mittal said, while regretting the huge loss of human life by the killer waves of tsunami.

The cable, is a 50:50 joint venture between Bharti and Singtel. The cable has a total capacity of 8.4 terabits and is about 3200 km long.

When contacted VSNL vice president (operations) K P Tiwari said the undersea cables of Tata Indicom, Chennai and Singapore, SEA-ME-WE-2 and SEA-ME-WE-3 and WASC are not affected. These are all consortium cables where VSNL is a landing signatory.
