In the wake of the recent introduction of unified access regime in the country, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Thursday said it would shortly come out with a resolution on the issue of change in phone numbering scheme.

"In the next couple of days, we will come out with a resolution on whether the numbering scheme should get changed. We will see if such a change is necessary and whether it is technically possible not to change it," Trai chairman Pradip Baijal said at an interactive session organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry, in New Delhi.

Baijal said that Trai would examine the issue in detail and take a view in 15 days.

"We should try not to change the numbers. But since there is a new unified access regime, we will change it (numbering plan) only if technically required, and that too to a minimum extent" he said, but did not comment on whether the changes would encompass only wireless services.

On the reports that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd was blocking the calls of telecom operators like Reliance and Tatas, Baijal said he had spoken to the chairman of the corporation who had assured him that calls were not being blocked.

"With the new interconnection regime, we have already addressed many issues. Now the issue is whether the interconnectivity shall take place at short distance charging area level or long distance charging area level, and we will have answers to these in 15 days," he said.
