Prasad to discuss CAS with PM on Sat

May 23, 2003 21:21 IST

Amidst reports of apprehensions in the Bharatiya Janata Party about the Conditional Access System, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is likely to meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday.

Prasad, who was on a week-long tour to Europe, is understood to have already sought an appointment with Vajpayee for Saturday.

Apparently worried about consumer reaction to CAS in an election year the BJP has said it would study the pros and cons and discuss the matter with Prasad before taking a final decision.

The party's apprehensions about CAS, under which cable TV viewers would need set-top boxes to access pay channels, has set off speculation that its implementation from July 14 in the four metros may be deferred.

However, the information and broadcasting ministry has maintained that it was committed to the July 14 deadline and any report about deferring its implementation was speculative.
