TRAI to announce IUC order on August 1

June 20, 2003 18:45 IST

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will announce the interconnection usage charges as applicable to operators on August one.

At an open house meet organised by the regulator in Kolkata on Friday, TRAI Chairman Pradip Baijal said that the IUC charges should be reviewed because technology and efficiency of the operators in a multi-operator environment were changing.

When asked if the IUC order would have any indication relating to the revision of tariff for fixed line operators, Baijal said TRAI would not intervene in this regard, adding that it would be a guideline, which would act as a benchmark for the basic operators.

He said that there was a need for specifying cost-based IUC for origin, carriage and termination usage charge, including access deficit charges payable to basic operators to keep rental and local calls affordable.

He said ADC constituted almost 30 per cent of the total telecom revenue and that it has to come down over a period of time.
