Making it clear that it would not interfere in the WLL handset pricing, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is said to have cleared latest handset schemes offered by basic service operators Reliance, BSNL and MTNL.

According to sources, Trai has asked all the companies to ensure that any customer opting to bring their own CDMA compatible handsets should be offered all the available tariff plans without any discrimination.

Trai is expected to issue an order to this effect by Thursday, sources said.

Trai was of the view that it would not regulate handset pricing, although the companies would have to make it known to customers that they can avail of the different tariff schemes even if they get their own handsets, sources said.

Earlier this month Trai had sought details from state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on its latest WLL offer in which it has offered to give a WLL connection for Rs 20, while in the case of Reliance it had asked the company as to why tariffs of Monsoon Hungama 501 offer were not sent to the regulator prior to advertisement blitz.

While Trai had asked both the companies to clarify the issue, it had not stopped the offers.

As per the Hungama 501, a subscriber gets a multimedia mobile phone and connection for Rs 501 only and has a range of Budget plans which start from Rs 149 per month, with incoming free across all plans.
