VHP for economic blockade of Bangladesh

January 21, 2003 20:01 IST

Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Tuesday accused the Vajpayee government of failure to put pressure on the Khaleda Zia regime to save minority Hindus from 'growing torture' and threatened to organise a economic blockade of Bangladesh.

"In Bangladesh, atrocities on Hindus are continuing. The Indian government has done nothing to save Bangladeshi Hindus. We will force the Indian government to put pressure on Bangladesh to take appropriate steps to safeguard the interests of the Hindus there," VHP general secretary Pravin Togadia told reporters in Kolkata.

Calling for economic blockade of Bangladesh to 'teach' Dhaka a 'lesson', Togadia said if appropriate action by the Centre were not forthcoming his organisation would consider organising a "chawal satyagraha" (blockade of rice) against Bangladesh.

Stating that rising infiltration from Bangladesh was posing a serious threat to the country's security, Togadia charged West Bengal's Left Front government with acting as "facilitator and protector" of Bangladeshi infiltrators for use as "vote banks" by providing them with false documents.
