Oil prices may go up by Re 1

Domestic retail prices of petrol and diesel may go up by around Re 1 a litre from December 31-January 1, provided the petroleum ministry agrees to oil refining and marketing companies' proposal in this regard.

However, the government may advise the oil marketing companies to hold back the "bad news" for another fortnight in view of the onset of the New Year.

The pricing committee of the four public sector marketing companies -- Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and IBP -- is of the view that the spurt in the international prices of both diesel and petrol in the past fortnight, there is a case for increasing the domestic prices of the two automobile fuels.
