Industrial sickness on the rise in Maharashtra

Renni Abraham

Maharashtra’s all-round industrial decline is now a matter of record. While 4,641 small, medium and large scale industrial units housed in over 200 Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation areas closed shop in 2000, in the current fiscal year up to June 2002, 3,427 units have been closed in the state.

The malaise of the industrial sickness is spread evenly across the state, giving a clear indicator of the general trend in the industry. In 2000, out of the 34,646 industrial units, 4,641 shut down. In 2001, over 1,000 units closed shop.

As a result, in the beginning of 2002, Maharashtra had 28,069 units. In the current fiscal, out of the 28,069 industrial units 3,427 have closed; 3,191 were small units while 236 were medium or large units.

The regionwise spread of the closed industrial units gives an adequate indicator of the industrial sector being plagued by closures as can be seen in the data on industrial units in the Konkan, Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad, Amravati and Nagpur divisions.

Of the 8,425 industrial units in the Konkan division, 1,340 small scale and 142 medium or large scale units have closed in 2002 so far. An alarmingly large number of closures have been registered in the Thane industrial belt where out of the existing 6,365 units 1,106 small scale and 87 medium or large scale units ceased operations this year.

The Greater Mumbai region lost 58 out of the 274 operating industrial units it started off with this year. In the Nashik division, out of the total 4,034 industrial units, 352 small scale and 42 medium or large scale units shut down this year with Nashik losing out 210 small units and 32 large scale units out of the total 2,295 units it started the year with.

In the Pune division, out of the 7,956 industrial units, 658 small scale and 27 medium or large scale units closed shop, with the Pune region being the biggest loser where 201 small scale units out of its 3,396 industrial units shut down.

In the Aurangabad division, out of the 5,370 industrial units, 427 small scale and 17 medium or large scale units closed down this year. Here the biggest loser was the Beed district which saw 100 small scale and five medium or large scale units out of a total of 127 units shutting down.

Similarly, the Amravati division saw 184 small scale and six medium or large scale industrial units out of a total 995 units closing down till June this year. Amravati district that boasted of 371 industrial units lost 76 small scale and three medium or large units.

The Nagpur division also exhibits similar downward trends with 230 small scale and two medium or large scale units reported to have shut down out to a total 1,289 industrial units. The Nagpur district lost 66 small scale units out of 1,057 units in all.
