CII earmarks Rs 10 million for sports

BS corporate bureau

The Confederation of Indian Industry has decided to earmark Rs 10 million for sponsoring sportspersons under its 'Golden Hopefuls' project.

The CII's national committee of sports recently cleared a proposal to sponsor seven sportspersons under the project.

The sportspersons will be chosen by CII with the help of the ministry of sports and youth affairs and the Sports Authority of India.

"We are close to finalising the name of the seven sportspersons. These will be people who have the capability of winning medals in the Olympics," a senior CII official told Business Standard. "We will be monitoring the progress of the sportspersons carefully," he said.

The sports that are likely to benefit from the CII sponsorship are shooting, athletics and billiards. CII will approach its members for the project and set up a fund for the purpose.

Recently, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding with the Sports Authority of India to invite private sector partnership in sports. CII, however, claims that its project has been going on for almost a year now.

"Over the last 7-8 months, the Golden Hopefuls core group consists of eminent sportspersons and sports journalists, members of the Indian Olympic Association and Sports Authority of India had met several times to decide the names of the sportspersons," said the CII official.
