Consult trade unions on labour reforms: Opposition

Opposition members on Friday criticised the government's move on labour reforms and demanded that trade unions be consulted before bringing in the controversial legislation to amend the Industrial Dispute and Contract Labour Acts.

The two amendments are meant to ease restrictions on employers on retrenchment and closure of unviable units and it is only appropriate that the government consult trade unions before taking any decision on this serious issue, they said.

Raising the issue through a special mention in the Rajya Sabha, CPI(M) member Jibon Roy said the issue was not discussed with trade unions which have given a nation-wide strike call on April 16.

He said he wondered whether the government would at least now discuss the issue with trade unions. The amendment through Industrial Dispute Act will allow all units employing less than 1000 workers to retrench the workforce and close units without taking permission from the government. At present, units employing less than 100 could do so.
