V N Kaul appointed new CAG

Vijayendra N Kaul, former petroleum secretary, was on Friday administered oath of office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India by President K R Narayanan.

Kaul succeeds V K Shunglu, who retires on Friday.

Vice President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his cabinet colleagues Yashwant Sinha, Ram Naik, C P Thakur and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and top officials including Cabinet secretary T R Prasad were present on the occasion at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Prior to becoming secretary in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, Kaul was secretary in the ministry of coal and subsequently in the department of chemicals and petrochemicals.

His earlier assignments had been in commerce, industry and finance departments. He also worked with United Nations for seven years as advisor (trade policy) for Asia Pacific Region.

Kaul joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1965 and belongs to the Madhya Pradesh cadre.
