K S Sarma takes over as Prasar Bharati CEO

After nearly four years, the Prasar Bharati now has a permanent chief executive officer with K S Sarma, former director general of Doordarshan, taking over Thursday.

He took over from Anil Baijal, an additional secretary in the ministry of information and broadcasting, who was holding the charge temporarily.

Sarma's selection was made by a high-level committee headed by Vice President Krishan Kant.

No stranger to the world of broadcasting, Sarma worked as director general of Doordarshan between 1996 and 1998 when he was also joint secretary, broadcasting.

During his tenure as DG, the revenues of Doordarshan showed unprecedented growth with several of its programmes dominating the popularity chart.

A 1968 batch IAS officer, Sarma, 58, was additional secretary, department of education in the human resource development ministry before taking over as CEO.

Prasar Bharati's first CEO S S Gill, appointed by the United Front Government, had to leave in 1998 when the Vajpayee Government decided to put an age limit of 62 years for the post.
