Plane door falls off, Vijaypat Singhania safe

The door of a King Air aircraft, carrying six executives of Raymond's Ltd, including its chairman Vijaypat Singhania, sheared off and fell on the runway shortly after take-off from Ratnagiri in the Konkan region of Maharashtra on Monday.

The aircraft, which landed safely at Ratnagiri, was on a flight to Mumbai when the incident occurred Monday afternoon, airport officials said.

The aircraft has been grounded, they said adding, a team from the Director General of Civil Aviation has already left for the site.

The King Air, owned by Udaipur-based Lake Palace Hotels and Motels, is maintained and operated by Air Works of Mumbai.

Singhania - himself a pilot - along with his executives, according to a company spokesman, had flown into Ratnagiri this morning and were returning after the annual general meeting.

Airport officials, meanwhile, said the aircraft door "might not have been closed properly", leading to the door falling off on the runway.
