Wipro plans to re-skill 550,000 teachers

Chairman of Wipro Ltd Azim Premji said Friday that only with a quality education system India could prepare the current and future generations to create value for the nation, as the company announced its plan to re-skill 550,000 teachers in the country over the next five years.

Speaking at the inaugural meet of the 'Wipro Forum for Quality in Education' in Bangalore, Premji expressed the view that it is the quality of education and what happens in school that contributes the most to the universalisation of elementary education.

According to Wipro officials, the Forum styles itself as a think-tank that would facilitate intelligent and productive discussions on education aimed at systemic changes in education.

Premji underscored the need to equip teachers with newer teaching-learning methods and competencies by which they could help build problem-solving skills among the students.

Teacher, the key change agent in a classroom, needed to be supported by the entire system -- the school management, the education boards and the regional as well as national bodies, Premji said.

"If education has to change, all the dimensions -- curriculum, evaluation, and pedagogy -- have to be aligned to maximise the impact of this change," Premji observed.

Company's vice-president (brand and corporate communications) Vijay K Gupta said Wipro had set itself a target of re-skill 50,000 teachers through contact workshops and 500,000 teachers through distance education.
