BJP, Fernandes disagree on oil sector divestment

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday said that it fully supported the divestment strategy of the government and disagreed with the view of Defence Minister George Fernandes, who has called for a thorough review of policy.

BJP spokesman Arun Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi that the BJP is of the view that oil is not a strategic sector, opposing what the Samata Party leader had stated.

"The three which are strategic are defence, atomic and nuclear energy," Jaitley said.

The government will decide on the methodology for the divestment of public sector oil companies in consultation with the concerned administrative ministries, he said.
