Vijay Kelkar to head task forces on tax

Advisor to finance minister, Vijay Kelkar, will head the task forces being set up to formulate strategies for reforming direct and indirect taxes, besides simplification of tax procedures, official sources said on Thursday.

Finance Minister Jaswant Singh had announced in Parliament on July 31 that three task forces would be set up for this purpose.

While the two task forces for reforming direct and indirect taxes would be given 90 days to come out with their recommendations, the task force for simplification of tax procedures would be given 45 days.

It is not yet clear whether the task force for simplifying the tax procedure would be merged into the other two or function as a separate entity as the terms of reference are common.

The task forces would have very broad representations from the chambers, industry and tax experts.
