Illinois Governor honours NRI businessman

In recognition of his work towards promoting Indo-US ties, the American state of Illinois has conferred upon leading leading Indian American businessman businessman Niranjan Shah a unique honour - declaring August 15 this year as `Niranjan Shah Day'.

Illinois Governor George Ryan declared through a proclamation that "August 15, 2002 will be Niranjan Shah Day in the entire state of Illinois."

This is in recognition of Shah's services in the last two decades in furthering relations between India and US and also promoting closer links between the Indian and the American community, a release from the Governor's office said.

The proclamation details the extraordinary accomplishments of Shah, including his appointment to the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, as also his role in fostering sister-city relationship between Chicago and Delhi and his appointment to the Economic Development Commission of Chicago.

Shah has been active among the Indian community for the last 20 years during which he has headed the Federation of Indian Associations and has been instrumental in organising relief efforts for the victims of natural disasters and man-made calamities in America and India.
