Wipro sacks 2 over sexual harassment

Two Wipro staffers were shown the door during the last six months on charges of sexual harassment, Vivek Paul, Wipro Technologies vice-chairman and president, disclosed on Wednesday.

Talking to newsmen in Bangalore, he said the company had a mechanism that handled such cases 'swiftly and fairly', without getting into 'legal and media exposure.'

Paul also clarified that both the dismissals were at a 'junior level' and not the 'top level.'

The disclosure comes close on the heels of the resignation of
Phaneesh Murthy, worldwide head of sales, Infosys Technologies, following allegations of sexual harassment by a former employee against him in the United States.

Paul said with 30 per cent newcomers every year, "You are exposed to varied culture and it's difficult to uphold Gandhian philosophies with an employee strength of 11,000."

However, the company had a strict mechanism to deal with such instances, he added.
