Discretionary quota for petro dealership revived

The government on Thursday told the Lok Sabha that it had revived the discretionary quota of retail outlet dealership, LPG distributorship and kerosene dealership for allotment on "genuine compassionate grounds to deserving persons".

The two categories for which the discretionary quota had been opened were dependents of defence, para-military and police personnel and employees of central and state governments who are killed in action or those permanently disabled and not suitably rehabilitated, Minister of State for Petroleum Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply.

"No allotment under the discretionary quota has been made by the government so far," Gangwar said.

In reply to another question, he said reservation was provided to various sections of society in the allotment of dealerships and distributorships.

While the reservation for open category was 50 per cent, it was 25 for scheduled castes and tribes, eight for defence, police and para-military personnel, five for the physically handicapped and two per cent each for freedom fighters and outstanding sports persons, Gangwar said.

LPG distributorships used to be allotted to those selected by the dealer selection boards which have been dissolved from May 9. Now, selection would be made by the oil marketing companies themselves, he said.

As per the existing policy, no person shall be awarded new dealership/distributorship if he or any of his close relative including step relatives already holds Letter of Intent or dealership/distributorship of any oil company, he added.
