Infosys pioneers modelling engine for BPM

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Infosys Technologies Ltd, the Bangalore-based global leader in consulting and IT services, has developed a process engine to demonstrate Business Process Modeling Language technology.

The technology is a specification for modelling end-to-end business processes from the Business Process Management Initiative, the leading standards consortium for Business Process Management or outsourcing.

The engine provides an abstract executable model to address all aspects of enterprise business processes. Using BPML, companies can better align their IT with business by gaining visibility into real-time business operations, flexibility to design and deploy dynamic business processes, and agility to collaborate with partners over extended value chains.

According to Infosys' chief operating officer S Gopalakrishnan, the Business Process Management is a paradigm shift that has far reaching implications for enterprises.

"The trend is gaining industry mind-share rapidly and is predicted to become a key feature of enterprise IT systems in the future. Through its membership in BPMI.org, Infosys is contributing to the evolution of this trend, which has the potential to transform businesses and provide competitive differentiation," Gopalakrishnan said in a statement released by the company in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Code-named Choreo, the process engine developed by Infosys is built on open standards and can be used for deploying and executing BPML processes. It consists of a BPML code repository and a BPML runtime environment that supports dynamic monitoring and control of processes.

"With this implementation, Infosys joins a growing number of software vendors and consulting firms that are demonstrating BPML and deploying it within production environments," said Ismael Ghalimi, chairman of BPMI.org and chief strategy officer of Intalio.

Implementations such as Infosys' contribute to the establishment of BPML as the de-facto standard for business process modelling and validate BPMI.org's commitment to the development of open and royalty-free standards for business process management, the statement added.

BPMI.org is a non-profit corporation that empowers companies across industries to develop and operate business processes that span multiple applications and business partners, behind the firewall and over the Internet.

The Initiative's mission is to promote and develop the use of BPM through the establishment of open and royalty-free standards for process design, deployment, execution, monitoring, and control.
