Monsoon revives after weak phase: IMD

The southwest monsoon rains have revived after a weak phase in several drought-hit regions, a senior weather official said on Monday.

"We can say there has been some revival in monsoon activity in the last couple of days and the outlook for the next two days is rainfall should continue," H R Hatwar of the India Meteorological Department told Reuters.

Hatwar said several regions in central India which grows soybean, western Maharashtra and parts of Rajasthan had received good rains during the weekend.

The June-September southwest monsoon rains arrived over the southern state of Kerala in early June and moved to the western parts of the country, but its progress in northwestern India has been erratic.

The monsoon is vital to India's economic health as agriculture contributes 25 per cent to the country's gross domestic product and employs some 70 per cent of its more than one billion population.
