BSNL set to launch cellular service

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is all set to launch its cellular mobile service either by this month-end or in the first week of September, Pritipal Singh, BSNL's chaiman and managing director said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad after launcing the BSNL customer All India Utility Portal Service, Answering Machine Service and Fibre to Home service, he said about 2.5 million cellular connections will be provided throughout the country in the first phase.

Of these, about 250,000 would be in Andhra Pradesh.

Singh said connections under the first phase would be completed by the end of the current fiscal and expressed hope that the service would be expanded to four million people spread over 1000 cities and towns.

The valuation process for the service is going on at the zonal level. It has almost been completed in the northern zone and also in Andhra Pradesh. ''The tariff for the service will be finalised by the TRAI,'' he said declining to reveal the charges.

Singh expressed confidence that BSNL would capture 50 per cent of the country's cellular service market in the next two years. The portal www.bsnl.in, launched on Saturday, is designed to leverage higher customer satisfaction, while the AMS is a free service to existing and new customers, being provided on request.

This feature brings all the conveniences of owning an answering machine to a customer with greater accessibility and security.

The Fibre to Home network is being implemented in Hyderabad so as to bring greater bandwidth availability to customers like software companies, corporates and universities.
