BJP chief says no need for Sinha to quit

Bharatiya Janata Party president Jana Krishnamurthy ruled out on Thursday Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha's resignation over the Union Budget presented to Parliament in February.

"There is no question," Krishnamurthy told reporters in Goa, when asked whether Sinha should resign because of opposition to his Budget proposals from some BJP members.

"Members are free to make suggestions. There is no question of resignation," he said.

Sinha has been severely criticised by some party members for his decision to withdraw tax benefits and cut interest rates on small savings schemes popular with the salaried class and pensioners.

The BJP, rattled by reverses in recent state elections and under fire for the country's worst religious bloodshed, begins a meeting in Goa under the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday.
