PV's kin arrested in forgery case

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Three accused in a forgery case, including a relative of former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, have been remanded to judicial custody till April 15.

The trio - V Prasada Rao (Rao's relative) and two of his accomplices - was arrested by the Hyderabad City Police on April 7 in a criminal case 'for seeking to defraud the Union Bank of India to the tune of Rs 30 million by using forged negotiable instruments'.

Prasada Rao's family, however, claimed that he had nothing to do with the scam.

The police charged the accused with attempting to secure a loan from the bank by producing forged documents, including a fake fixed deposit receipt in the name of one Viren N Shah, purportedly issued by a bank in Pune.

The UBI Secunderabad branch manager lodged a complaint with the police after verifying the documents produced by the accused with his counterpart in Maharashtra.

The trio was produced before the XV Metropolitan Magistrate in the city on Monday.
